Let’s get to know each other
Hey, I'm Gustav
I'm a wedding photographer who believes the best moments happen when you stop trying to create perfect and start embracing real. While I'm based in British Columbia, my camera and I have traveled from the vineyards of Stellenbosch, South Africa, to the alpine meadows of Sun Peaks, from Fraser Valley farms to Cariboo celebrations. I'm drawn to couples who want their wedding to reflect who they actually are—whether that's honoring Mexican and Scottish heritage, celebrating a love for hunting and the outdoors, or simply rolling with whatever Mother Nature throws at you. If your idea of the perfect wedding involves chairlifts to mountain summits, private vows by pristine lakes, cultural traditions that matter to you, or just celebrating in the landscapes you love—we're probably going to get along great.
From Videographer to Photographer (and Why It Matters)
I actually started as a videographer before transitioning to photography. That background shapes how I see weddings—I'm not just thinking about single moments, but about the flow of the day, the story unfolding, the way one moment connects to the next. I see movement, emotion, and narrative in a way that only comes from understanding both mediums. I've photographed weddings from the Bahamas to Jamaica, the Caribbean to Mexico, Spain to Namibia, across the USA, and throughout South Africa. Now based in British Columbia, I bring all that international experience to couples who want their day captured with both technical skill and genuine heart.
A Love for Dance Photography
Being married to a professional dancer for years has developed in me a unique appreciation for movement, grace, and capturing the human body in motion. Dance photography taught me to anticipate moments before they happen, to see the beauty in movement, and to work with people who express themselves physically. This translates beautifully to weddings—whether it's capturing a first dance, the way a bride moves down the aisle, or the energy of a packed dance floor. I understand rhythm, timing, and how to freeze motion at exactly the right moment.
My Approach
I don't believe in stiff, overly posed photography. I believe in documenting what actually happens—the hilarious moments, the unexpected weather, the genuine emotion, the cultural celebrations, and the perfectly imperfect reality of your day. Some of my favourite images from weddings are the ones you can't plan.. After 25 years, I've learned that the best images come from real moments—the hilarious ones, the unexpected weather, the genuine emotion, the cultural celebrations, and the perfectly imperfect reality of your day. These are the moments that make your wedding uniquely yours.
What I Bring to Your Wedding
20+ Years of Experience: From videography to photography, retail management to Nikon corporate work, cruise ships to international destinations—I've seen it all and photographed most of it.
International Perspective: Having shot weddings across multiple continents and now calling Canada home, I understand different cultures, traditions, and celebration styles. Your heritage matters, and I'm here to document it authentically.
Technical Excellence: My years with Nikon and in photographic retail mean I know my equipment inside and out. Technical problems don't happen because I'm prepared for everything.
Movement & Emotion: My dance photography background means I see and capture movement beautifully—perfect for first dances, ceremony walks, and all the flowing, dynamic moments of your day.
Adventure Spirit: Want to ride a chairlift to a mountain summit? Shoot at a spectacular viewpoint? Capture photos at a mountain lake before your ceremony? I'm 100% on board. I've photographed in locations across the globe—adventure doesn't scare me.
Cultural Sensitivity: Whether it's a Mexican band meeting Scottish Highland dress, honoring South African traditions, or celebrating any culture that's meaningful to you, I bring respect and understanding to documenting heritage.
Real Over Perfect: After photographing hundreds of weddings across the world, I know the magazine-perfect shot is nice, but the real laugh, the genuine tear, the unscripted moment—that's what you'll treasure forever.
Life Outside Weddings
When I'm not photographing, you'll find me mountain biking through BC trails (such a different landscape from Cape Town, but I'm loving it), firing up the BBQ (a skill that translates across continents), exploring new wineries with my wife, or hunting down the perfect coffee.
I'm a devoted Airedale Terrier lover, a fan of "The Office," "Parks and Recreation," and "My Name is Earl" (if we can quote these shows to each other, we're going to get along great). Most importantly, I love the Lord Jesus Christ, and my faith shapes how I see the world and the people in it—with grace, appreciation, and joy. My daughter keeps me grounded and reminds me daily what's truly important. Watching my wife continue her dance career in Canada while building our new life here has been an adventure in itself—one that's taught me a lot about partnership, adaptation, and building something beautiful in a new place.
Who I Work Best With
After 20+ years and countless weddings across multiple continents, I've learned I work best with couples who:
